CNBC's Jim Cramer questioned whether the hotter-than-expected consumer price index data accurately represents the state of inflation, saying Wall Street's wave of Wednesday selling could have been a mistake. "These headline CPI numbers do not reflect reality as I see it." The Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI is a key inflation metric — a broad measure of the cost of goods and services across the economy. Cramer first pointed to the 0.9% month-over-month increase in the price of meat, poultry, fish and eggs, with the latter alone climbing 4.6%. "I'm not talking about the absolute numbers, I'm talking about the trendlines, because the trendlines suggest that selling in response to this report may have been and could be a mistake."

Embrace firm egg yolksTo be extra safe, fully cook your meat and eggs, said Alcaine. Just as you would to prevent salmonella or E.coli infections, you should cook meat and eggs at hot-enough temperatures to prevent illness. AdvertisementAdditionally, Alcaine said you'll want to be wary of cross-contamination, such as keeping the utensils used to handle raw meat and eggs away from cooked food. However, some states allow the sale of raw milk and unpasteurized cheese, which have been growing in popularity over recent years. AdvertisementIn general, drinking raw milk can lead to side effects like vomiting and diarrhea, and just to be safe, the CDC also suggests abstaining in light of this recent outbreak.

Washington CNN —Egg prices have now been steadily rising for months, and your omelette could become even more expensive as poultry farms around the country deal with an outbreak of bird flu. While egg prices are down from a record $4.82 in January 2023 — after a widespread bird flu outbreak ravaged farms in the prior year — they’re now at the highest level since April 2023. Cal-Maine did not immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment on what the bird flu outbreak means for its egg prices. Bird flu has been detected at other farms across the country. Michigan’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development announced Tuesday that it found evidence of bird flu at a commercial poultry facility in Ionia County.

Some economists interpreted that as a sign that the Fed is now more tolerant of higher inflation. Powell pushed back on the perception that the central bank has grown more comfortable with inflation being higher for longer than expected in his post-meeting news conference. and my sense coming out of this month’s meeting was that Fed Chair Powell wants to get this easing cycle going sooner rather than later. What’s allowing the Fed to be patient or more tolerant of higher inflation? They’re willing to essentially look through some of the bumpiness in the inflation data at the beginning of the year.

Elena Perova | Istock | Getty ImagesJust ahead of the holiday season, Walmart had encouraging news for inflation-weary shoppers: Prices on food and other staples were falling instead of rising. But the retail giant backpedaled this week, saying higher prices on many grocery items and household staples like paper goods have stuck. Food prices climbed 2.6%, fueled by a 5.1% jump in prices for food away from home, a category that includes restaurant meals and vending machine purchases. That gives their makers the ability to keep raising prices to mitigate higher costs, even as their volume drops. Even some of the biggest U.S. brands have signaled that consumers' tolerance of higher prices has worn thin.

For instance, the U.S. has blocked shipments of cotton coming from China, a top manufacturer of popular clothing brands, because it was produced by forced or prison labor. While prison labor seeps into the supply chains of some companies through third-party suppliers without them knowing, others buy direct. Cargill acknowledged buying goods from prison farms in Tennessee, Arkansas and Ohio, saying they constituted only a small fraction of the company’s overall volume. For instance, about a dozen state prison farms, including operations in Texas, Virginia, Kentucky and Montana, have sold more than $60 million worth of cattle since 2018. “What for?”FOLLOWING THE MONEYThe business of prison labor is so vast and convoluted that tracing the money can be challenging.

The jury ruled last week that the egg producers used various means to limit the domestic supply of eggs to increase the price of products during the 2000s. The damages verdict was reached Friday in the Northern District of Illinois. According to federal antitrust law, the damages are automatically tripled, bringing the total to over $53 million. Court documents on the verdict were not readily available Friday evening, but statements from the manufacturers' attorney and one of the egg producers confirmed a total of about $17.7 million. Email messages sent to the United Egg Producers and United States Egg Marketers representatives were not immediately returned Friday.

The damages award could be tripled under U.S. antitrust law to more than $53 million. The same jury on Nov. 21 found the egg producers liable for the alleged antitrust conspiracy after a more than five-week trial. The damages award was limited to alleged overpayments during a four-year window in the mid-2000s. The jury's liability decision held Cal-Maine accountable with other defendants, including trade associations United Egg Producers and United States Egg Marketers. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — An Illinois jury ruled this week that several major egg producers conspired to limit the U.S.'s supply of eggs in order to raise prices in a lawsuit first filed 12 years ago. The suppliers include the family company of an Indiana egg farmer running for the U.S. Senate in the state. Attorneys for the four egg suppliers named in the lawsuit did not immediately return phone messages on Wednesday. Other food manufacturers joining as plaintiffs in the lawsuit against the egg producers are General Mills, Inc. and Nestle USA, Inc. The jury found the egg suppliers who participated in the conspiracy were Cal-Maine Foods, Inc., United Egg Producers, Inc., United States Egg Marketers, Inc. and Rose Acre Farms, Inc., a southern Indiana-based company previously chaired by John Rust.

A group of poultry producers, including the world’s largest, have asked a federal judge to dismiss his ruling that they polluted an Oklahoma watershed. Arkansas-based Tyson Foods, Minnesota-based Cargill Inc. and the others say in a motion filed Thursday that evidence in the case is now more than 13 years old. A spokesperson for Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond did not immediately return a phone call for comment Saturday. “The Court’s findings and conclusions rest upon a record compiled in 2005–2009,” the poultry companies' motion stated. Attorneys for the companies and the state attorney general each said in Thursday filings that mediation had failed.

A bumper harvest will strain storage capacity and hold down prices of the world's most traded commodity crop. Already corn prices are trending near three-year lows at a time when some food prices are rising due to tight supplies of other staples like rice, stoking inflation worries. Just 16 months ago corn prices were at their highest in a decade as the war in Ukraine disrupted supplies from the Black Sea breadbasket. USDA forecast that domestic corn supplies would jump 55% to 2.111 billion bushels in the 2023/24 marketing year, helping push the global stockpile to a five-year high by September 2024. Some growers need to take out loans to fund their operations as they wait and hope corn prices will rise.

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The U.S. has detected its first case of avian flu on a commercial poultry farm since April, in a flock of 47,300 turkeys in Jerauld County, South Dakota, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) said. Infected flocks are culled to prevent the spread of the virus, potentially tightening the poultry meat and egg supply if more cases occur. Wild birds like ducks transmit the virus. Prior to this week's outbreak, U.S. infections were limited to live bird markets and "non-poultry" birds since April, USDA records show. The last commercial farms infected in April raised turkeys in South Dakota and North Dakota, records show.

Egg prices are crashing. Here’s why
  + stars: | 2023-05-15 | by ( Danielle Wiener-Bronner | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
One reason: Shoppers responded to high egg prices by buying less. When prices were shooting up, “everybody and their brother had a story about what egg prices were doing,” said Amy Smith, vice president at Advanced Economic Solutions, a consulting firm. Retail egg prices have been declining at a more moderate clip. (On an annual basis, prices are still high: In the year through April, egg prices were 21.4% higher.) That’s because supermarkets and grocery stores set retail egg prices, and they don’t want customers to be scared away by wild swings.
